a happy home

being raised by dharma and greg

Born to a happy, two parent household driven into social exile and financial ruin shortly after his powers surfaced, Clay's life has been on a downward spiral ever since. This is the classic story of those like Clay. The all too common tale of the world's most despised "subgroup". It only makes sense that this would be Clay's story, too. Right?

Well, nothing could be further from the truth.

Clayton was born on the 18th of March, 2029 to Janeane and Marcus Caldwell in a rural town in Northern Oregon. His mother was a painter and a member of her generation's "hippies," while his father was a far more serious albeit compassionate man with a successful legal practice.

Despite being a real life Dharma and Greg, the two held far more alike than they differed. Janeane had spearheaded more than her fair share of civil protests in her youth and had been involved in more sit-ins than she had boyfriends. No less of a warrior for equality, Marcus preferred to use the courtroom as his battleground and had been fighting to extend legal protections to the poor and disadvantaged for years. These were the two people who raised Clay.

As their only child, Clay never went wanting and never felt unloved. Regular vacations to places around the world, a nurturing environment, all within a close knit community, Clay had quite the normal, perhaps even somewhat unusually unblemished childhood.

gills? ...gills

being tossed back by davy jones

Life suddenly changed on the night he learned he was Special.

Late one night, just before starting his sophomore year in high school, Clay went out with some friends. Initially going only to see his crush Michael, who would later become his first boyfriend, Clay followed the group of teenagers to the beach. Though Clay can't remember why anymore, the group decided to go for a swim, despite knowing that was against one of the biggest rules of the ocean. With the moon peaking just over the horizon and the soft laps of low tide waves at their feet, they all thought it was safe. With the tide further out, however, the deep currents were that much closer and it only took a few minutes to realize they were being carried away from the shoreline, and waves only grow less gentle the further you get from the coast.

It took only a single wave to cast Clay just below the surface and just one more to send him another yard down. In a matter of minutes, the surface became indistinguishable and the pitch black of the ocean at night soon became all he could see. Despite his best efforts, Clay couldn't hold his breath forever and after a minute, his body forced him to gulp at the water. As the sting of the salt water lurched down his throat and the fire in his lungs drove him into a panic, Clay came to assume this would be the end. Time seemed to freeze as he drifted along in the water like uprooted seaweed.

Then a firm hand gripped his arm and suddenly he felt himself being dragged to the surface. The moment his head was above water he began to cough up all the saline in his lungs. Before he knew it, Clay was being pulled along the beach through the shallows and finally realized it had been Michael that pulled him from the water. Once the two were clear of the water, Michael fell to his knees and leaned over Clay, ready to perform CPR. However, the moment he saw Clay was wide awake and breathing, Michael seemed stunned.

That was when the rest of the group came over to the two of them to see if Clay was alright, but as soon as they noticed Clay's condition, they also seemed to stiffen in demeanor. After Michael helped Clay to his feet, the group decided that a near death experience was more than enough excitement for one night and Clay got into Michael's car and the two drove home. It was on the way back that Michael finally told Clay why he and their friends were so stunned when they saw him. Clay had been under the water for 30 minutes before Michael finally found him. Survival would have been a miracle by itself, but Clay had been perfectly fine despite having spent half an hour with no air. That was the moment Clay realized he was different.

a new life

being a true parent

After a very long night of yelling, scolding, and lecturing, Clay's parents finally let him go to sleep. The next morning, his father took him down to the nearest Enforcers headquarters in Portland to register. Despite Clay's misgivings, his father made sure his son followed the law. The old man believed that abiding by the law of the land was the easiest way to avoid unnecessary trouble, and even if this law was wrong, breaking it did nothing but make his son a criminal. That pragmatism was perhaps the most defining quality of his father, and one that Clay always admired.

It didn't take long for word to get around that Clay had visited the Enforcer's headquarters and within weeks, his parents were already starting to lose friends. By the end of his sophomore year, Clay had lost most of his own friends and was forced to mostly befriend the only other Specials at school, aside from a couple of humans, Michael being one of them. As one of the only humans who didn't care what Clay was, it didn't take long for the two of them to start dating, a relationship which lasted until Clay left his hometown after his senior year.

Almost immediately after graduation, the Caldwell family packed up their stuff and moved to Portland, partially so that Clay could attend his father's alma mater, but also because Clay's father, Marcus had a new passion to pursue, a passion inspired by his own son. As tensions over humanity's fear of different and the increasing pressure placed upon the Special community, Marcus Caldwell decided to delve into politics. By the time Clay had finished his first year in college, his father had established a fairly widespread base of support among the Specials of Portland and the humans who were sympathetic to their plight.

In 2048, Marcus Caldwell became State Representative Caldwell. Even with greater media scrutiny, Clay's life continued to push on with little delay and his family began to grow in influence. The name Caldwell became almost synonymous on the West Coast with the crazy notion of equality for the Specials population. It only made sense that Clay should follow in his father's footsteps. Especially, when the unthinkable happened.

no man escapes tragedy

life can change in a heartbeat

As Clay approached his final steps towards graduation from the Lewis and Clark Law School, Clay was forced to realize, for the first time, how fragile life truly was for his people and those who would dare seek justice for them.

On a night that he'll never forget, Clay was greeted at his front door by two policemen who had come to inform him that both of his parents were dead. According to the officers, they'd been killed by three men who identified themselves as "Purists" once apprehended. As if fate wanted to rub salt in the wound, he also had to go to the morgue and provide a positive identification for his parents' bodies.

Over the next few months, Clay simply went through the motions. He went to school, wrote down the lectures, ate his lunches, and went to sleep, but he still couldn't tell you much of anything about that part of his life. Grief had consumed him and he'd been fortunate that he was smart enough to make good grades with only partial awareness of his surroundings. As graduation day finally approached, which also happened to coincide with the date he received his inheritance and his parents' life insurance, as well as when his parents' murderers were sentenced to life in prison for first degree murder of a State Congressman, Clay was suddenly struck with purpose.

As if struck by lightening, Clay realized that he had to continue his father's work, and while Portland had become his home, Clay needed to leave for the sake of emotional stability. So in 2055, Clay packed up all that he wanted to keep and sold off the rest, and moved to a place he thought needed far more help, Lincoln City, California.

now

a new beginning

When first arriving in Lincoln, Clay struggled just to pass the bar exam to be able to practice law in California, let alone find employment. As soon as he did, though, there was a plethora of law firms willing to increase their client pool by being "open to Special cases", and Clay was a convenient token for law firms to appear relatable. Even so, his first year in Lincoln was hard, but by June of 2057, Clay had become a fairly well known name in the area as a Special who proved success was possible for his kind, if only given the chance.

Then in 2058, Clay was finally able to convince a few, big donors just itching to write off a local outreach program as a tax deduction, to put up the money for a local civic center in South Lincoln. With a fair amount of charisma, a handful of local, volunteer nurses, legal advisers, and some physical trainers, and a lot of motivation to see his plan succeed, Clay managed to turn the center into something of a beacon of hope for a group that had been deprived of such a thing for far too long.

Now, Clay works at the center full time, only taking a salary just over what he needs to cover the bare minimum of living expenses and has even been able to offer part time employment to a handful of struggling Specials. Although Clay is the first to admit his work through his center is far smaller than his father's through the Oregon House of Representatives, Clay goes home with a great sense of accomplishment. Stressed, but accomplished.

Ever his father's son, Clay is also working towards getting some approval from the state to run a type of program that would teach local Specials to control their powers, and better understand what they can do. Unfortunately, the government has thus far been reluctant to allow any organized training for Specials...Clay assumes it's out of fear.

Mature content

  • (M)/Smut: Yes, with plot

tl;dr

Clay is trustworthy, dependable, honest, and devoted to those he cares about. Sometimes overly willing to give of himself in the interest of helping those in need, Clay is the type of person who usually needs to be reminded to eat or even shower. Clay also loves food, loves live music, loves the beach and surfing, and is rarely above the occasional one night stand.

Friends

Clay has a handful of friends, some special, some human, and even a couple Enforcers, but most of his time is spent at the center. Thus, the few people he does consider his close friends are involved in similar work and are just as devoted to his cause as he is. These are the people he would gladly give his last penny to or walk in the pouring rain in the middle of the night down the interstate just to help them home, if they needed it.

The occasional weekend drinks and his biweekly trips to the beach to surf are usually the only things reminiscent of a social life that he allows for himself. Of course, the nights he does decide to go out drinking don't usually last too long because as a diabetic he can't drink too often. So when he does, it doesn't take much to do the job.

Enemies

As a Special who has the audacity to think that Specials are entitled to the same rights as any human, Clay has no doubt acquired a few enemies over the years. Clay was also well known back home and it's possible that those who wanted his father dead may also want him dead.

At the moment, however, no one is actively, in public, putting a concerted effort into ruining or ending his life.

Lovers

Clay has had many lovers since leaving his hometown and even more since arriving in Lincoln. Unfortunately, this is about as far as it goes with him. Clay is perhaps the very definition of the phrase "married to your work". The occasional one night stand is usually as intimate as he will ever get. Thus, it would no doubt take a very special person to pull his attention away from his work.

Clay & Jax

I feel like initially, a couple of years ago, Jaxon probably would’ve...not liked Clay. Jax was a very black and white type guy when it came to Enforcers and Specials, so I can imagine that these two butted heads a lot. Yet Jaxon wasn’t the type to get aggressive, when he’s mad, he gets cold and shuts people out and treats them like he thinks they are dirt.

Now, currently, Jaxon’s mindset has changed pretty significantly within the last year. His girlfriend (he’s gonna marry her tbh) is a Special, his sister is a Special, and Jaxon’s beginning to doubt the point of being so hard on them to begin with. His mentality is switching, and he’s got some...regret about how the treated them in the past to how he wants to treat them and how he thinks they should be treated now. (that is obviously with respect and as if they are equals).

I think if these two met now, Jaxon would try to be helpful, not hurtful. He’d probably offer to do what he could within the law (that might change in the future, DUN DUN DUnnn) to actually help people out. Whatever that may be.

Clay and Ama

I would love for these two to be acquaintances/friends.

Everything you said is spot on. Ama would definitely come to him with his legal knowledge if she needed it and she would definitely offer to help anytime she could when it came to the children there. I think they also have a solid connection, if children show up there, he might be able to send them Ama’s way if they’re looking for a safe-house that’s off the grid.

Ama is currently repairing a new place that is an old B&B, so she has plenty of room to spare for kids and teens who are trying to make it on their own but need a warm, safe place to sleep at night.

You thinking these two already know each other pretty well? I think there’s more potential there if they’ve already established a friendship.

Clay & Samael

I’m going to bring this one your way, because I feel there is a very solid and real possibility that these two are working together, or know of one another.

Sam the actor likes to do charity work, and he doesn’t discriminate from Special or Human (that’s kind of his thing publically). I can see the actor himself coming by to meet and greet people and help Clay and his facility out in any way he can, including donations if Clay is looking for that.

Now, on the flip side, Samael the Resistance Leader is no doubt watching and monitoring Clay’s facility, and making sure it stays safe. Samael’s likely communicated with Clay before, perhaps even ‘met him’ (I say that with quotes because Samael warps memories so people don’t recognize his face). Either way, Samael likes what Clay does helping specials, and anyone who helps specials is a friend of Samael’s. (well, as friend as he gets).

My ideas are: Samuel visits and does good things because he is a good person. Samael visits ‘off hours’ because he likes to make sure his specials are being treated right and are safe.

Thoughts?

I like all of this.

I think the second encounter might be cute too. If he just gives warnings and maybe talks to a few Specials about stuff. If Clay came up and asked what the change of heart was, Jax might make a comment about how things are wrong and confide a little bit.

And of course, offer to be there to help in the future.

I’m loving this potential for interaction, and development on Jaxon’s part.

Clay & Samael

Despite his very radical ideas of how to get there, Samael has only had one thing on his agenda: Specials and making sure they get the best they can get. Samael protects specials, reaches out to help them, attempts to recruit them, but he will never turn on them. His radical mindset is focused on those who oppress and shun, and he’s not about to target people (especially specials) who are helping other specials.

Now, Clay’s more peaceful activism will irritate Samael (and Samuel, quietly), but he won’t not offer some protection. There will be no strings or payback (he’s not a mob boss in that sense) but his people answer to him, and his people are the same radicals as he. They won’t stop fighting until someone is dead, or close to it, if the need arises.

As for the actor, I imagine Sam himself took an interest when he heard about Clay and his intentions for a community center for Specials. He’s a good man somewhere in that radical heart of his, and he does care. (about Specials, and his image). On that end, he would absolutely donate yearly to Clay and his cause, and would speak well about someone trying to do good in the world.

Clay and Ama

When it comes to her new home, she was given a very hefty donation from one Noah Erikkson, so unfortunately I can’t imagine that she’d need Clay’s help when it comes to finances. Besides, Ama is trying very hard to stay on the down-low. Her safe-house isn’t a broadly known thing unless the people (see: adults) who know are very close to her. It’s mostly children and teens who need help and look for Ama, that truly know about what she does and where it is.

As for Ama being someone to escort Specials to Enforcer HQ. She….would, but she’d not be happy about it. She tries to avoid Enforcers as much as she can, and she’s really not a fan of the ‘registration’ system. But she knows that there’s some benefits to it as well, so she might be someone who will reluctantly help on that front. If Clay needs help with kids however, Ama is definitely the one to call.

As for your other character omg gimmie. Ama loves people and loves helping them so. Yas.

Noah and Clay

If your working out stuff with Ama, I could see them meeting that way, even. Although, it's likely that they've met briefly before and maybe thought nothing of it. Maybe they meet again and it's like "hmm... I've seen you somewhere before, haven't I?" sort of thing.

As for where Noah is in his timeline, I'm not so sure they'd butt heads as much as the once would have (though it's totally possible they have in the past couple years). After discovering that he's Special, Noah's focus has shifted a bit and he... is kind of a pretty shit Enforcer nowadays. He skirts the law sometimes and has become pretty understanding toward Specials.

As far as his sexuality goes, he's always been subconsciously aware that guys are gorgeous and women are... present and accounted for. Recently, I'd say within the last couple of months, he's really started to realize that his "attraction" to girls is really just a Pavlovian response to sex in general. So while he hasn't actually said "hey, I'm gay" to anyone, he has, in a sense, come out to himself so that's a start. But because Noah is a complicated person with stupid hateful parents, he's never actually let himself be intimate with another guy.

That being said, I wouldn't be opposed to Noah doing some experimentation with Clay, though I don't know if it would get to actual sex because of his recent emotional attachments to someone else. As that relationship progresses, he's less and less likely to sleep around but that won't stop him from considering the possibilities. I mean, the guy he's interested in is a hooker so there's a part of him that... maybe wants to even the playing field, a bit. Sort of a passive aggressive jealous revenge sort of thing (so healthy).

Regardless of whether or not that happens (or has happened, I'm still deciding) I would love to see them develop a camaraderie. Noah is in desperate need of friends he can actually confide in about his powers, his sexuality, his, well... everything because this boy is stressed the fuck out.

Clay & Samael

So this is where things get neat. Sam likes to use his telepathy to make sure no one knows who ‘Samael’ really is. He alter’s people’s memories of their encounters with him, and makes the face of Samael look like someone entirely different. (We’re talking Benedict Cumberbatch to Will Smith here), so it’s rather unlikely that Clay will associate Sam with the Resistance in that way.

Now, if we go off your idea and scenario, it’s entirely possible Clay might be suspicious about Sam’s involvement with the Resistance, especially if the actor shows up after the ‘confrontation’ and perhaps a few days later the hired hands are “gone”. (Samael would just find new men/women to keep an eye and make sure they kept their distance from the facility)

At the moment, Sam works hard to make sure no one knows that he’s involved, let alone heading, the violent sector of the resistance.

I still like the idea of these two meeting though, talking about Clay’s work and Sam donating because he’s that kind of good guy.

Somehow I managed to miss your post to the plotter in my posting landslide and clearing all the alerts I... Hadn't actually looked at. >< So I'm sorry for taking so long to reply!

She could get in contact with him in regards to someone who found her but didn't necessarily need her particular brand of help. Since the vast majority of what she does is building new identities there could be an odd person who needs more of the help of a social worker. We could play it as a first meeting. Like she seeks him out to try and feel him out and decide on if she should slide this potential person over to him instead? Would that work for you?
